Feel the adrenaline of extreme trails and discover the heritage and modernity of Porto
The Serra de Valongo mountains rise to about 500 meters and offer everything an enduro rider could want—steep climbs, rocky trails, slippery sections, and endless single-tracks winding through rugged hills above the Douro River.
You’ll ride across mixed terrain: loose gravel (“cascalheira”), chunky “bom calhau” rock sections, riverbeds, creeks, and fast fire roads that connect the technical parts. The hard, abrasive quartzite rock gives excellent traction but also keeps you alert—every line matters.
Expect technical climbs, rocky downhills, and quick transitions between flowy gravel and demanding singletrack. The area includes some of the world-class Extreme XL Lagares trails, so it can easily adapt to any skill level — from confident beginners to pro riders.
September to June. Summer can be dusty, while wetter months bring extra challenge and grip changes. For balanced conditions, choose September, October, April, or May. If you crave technical, tough terrain—November to April is your time.
The region is famous for its hearty cuisine — from the iconic Francesinha, a layered sandwich drenched in spicy beer sauce, to slow-cooked Tripas à Moda do Porto, a dish that reflects the city’s seafaring heritage. Freshly grilled Atlantic fish, smoky alheira sausages, and rustic stews are best paired with a glass of local Vinho Verde or a smooth Port wine from the nearby Douro Valley.
Pestana Douro Riverside, member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts, is located on the right bank of the Douro River, 10 minutes away from Porto city center. A fascinating setting for your stay!
Beyond the trails, Porto offers a vibrant blend of culture, history, and nightlife that makes every enduro trip unforgettable. Riders can wander the cobbled streets of the UNESCO-listed old town, explore the striking architecture of the Dom Luís I Bridge and Livraria Lello, or visit the famous Port wine cellars across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia. As evening falls, the city comes alive with live music, cozy wine bars, and riverside restaurants serving local tapas.
